I am an energetic, highly-engaging, professional counselor licensed in Missouri, Illinois, and Vermont. I also have temporary licenses in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.I have been told that I have a professional, youthful, warm demeanor. My clients call me Dr. Joe. I hold a Ph.D. from St. Louis University, where I specialized in systemic family therapy. I have a lifetime of experience and bring it to each session. In recent years, I have focused on couples counseling, and use The Gottman Method. I have been certified to administer the Gottman Relationship Checkup...a powerful tool to help couples get back on track. Personally, I have been married for 45 years. I have written two counseling-related books: Transforming Scrooge, and If You Build It. One is based upon A Christmas Carol and the other on Field of Dreams. I have been invited to take part in this summer's Field of Dreams major league baseball game festivities in August. I was the Director of Student Counseling at Lindenwood University from 2013-2017. I like working with young adults, along with adults of all ages, including those over 65. I was an assistant professor, and I also am licensed in Missouri as a Communication Skills teacher and a Reading Specialist. I have a certificate from the Zur Institute in Cinema Therapy. I love literature, film, and books, and often integrate them into therapy sessions. I am told I have a unique therapy style. I can help with stress, anxiety, worry, depression, PTSD, ADD, OCD, grief, and existential issues. I can also help with Covid-19 issues. I have successfully counseled straight, gay, lesbian, and transgender clients.
