Personal Statement

I have a unique, eclectic, approach to therapy. Because everyone has different goals, needs and expectations I like to meet with my clients and tailor their treatment and goals to them. I like to use a client-centered approach which uses a non-authoritative approach that allows clients to take more of a lead in discussions so that, in the process, they will discover their own solutions. The therapist acts as a compassionate facilitator, listening without judgment and acknowledging the client’s experience without moving the conversation in another direction.

The therapist is there to encourage and support the client and to guide the therapeutic process without interrupting or interfering with the client’s process of self-discovery.

I also utilize humanistic therapy which is a positive approach to psychotherapy that focuses on a person’s individual nature rather than categorizing groups of people with similar characteristics as having the same problems. Humanistic therapy looks at the whole person, not only from the therapist’s view but from the viewpoint of individuals observing their own behavior. The

emphasis is on a person’s positive traits and behaviors, and the ability to use their personal instincts to find wisdom, growth, healing, and fulfillment within themselves. Existential- Humanistic therapy celebrates the uniqueness of each of us as human beings. It acknowledges that we are aware of ourselves and our world. It also acknowledges that we can change our existence by exploring in depth how we have formed our view of ourselves and the world.

I have extensive experience working with clients that struggle with substance abuse issues as well as co-dependency. I work with adolescents as well as adults. I do not treat younger children. I see couples as well as individuals and families. I feel that my life experiences coupled with the clinical training provided to me has given me the ability to treat clients effectively and with compassion.
