Hello,
My name is Wilson Fuller. I am a clinical psychologist, licensed in the state California, with over 14 years of experience in the mental health field. I’ve worked in community and forensic settings (both inpatient and outpatient), residential treatment centers, provided personalized individual psychotherapy, and, in my former career, worked with individuals and organizations to enhance team and individual job performance.
When clients I have worked with mention my style they always refer to my belief that, while a strong background in the theoretical underpinnings of psychotherapy is essential, the most important thing a therapist can bring to the therapy session is a belief in straight talk and a desire to really understand the problems that he or she and the client are collaborating on to solve. When faced with seemingly insurmountable difficulties people frequently receive advice from friends who are well-meaning, but who are often at a loss to help. Sometimes people consult highly qualified “experts” who provide them with tried-and-true standardized formulas designed to fix most anything. But, as individuals, we have to find those answers that are best for us. At the same time, it is clear that no approach to change can be truly effective unless it is offered with a genuine sense of compassion and empathy from a therapist who has the desire to see others grow and achieve their goals.

I initially trained in psychodynamic therapy, with its emphasis on deep-seated conflicts that recurringly handicap us in achieving balance in life. And, while I still find value in understanding a person’s past, my years of experience conducting therapy have taught me that it is the client’s problems in the present that have to be addressed, with deep reflective understanding coming later if necessary. To facilitate this I have spent the last seven years working within humanistic and existential modalities that, while acknowledging the historical roots of often incapacitating problems, look to offer practical solutions to them in the present. My training background includes work in Cognitive -Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Lacanian Psychoanalysis and Solution Focused Therapy.
