About
All of us have crisis points in our lives, times when it's hard to know what to do and where to turn. I'm here for you. My approach is gentle and down to earth. As a therapist, I provide a safe and caring place for you to express the full range of your thoughts and feelings as we work together toward realistic and sustainable life changes. My clinical orientation is eclectic, utilizing a variety of techniques. My sessions are tailored to whatever works best for you and your own unique needs.
I became a therapist during a mid-life career change. I have an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University's Los Angeles campus and a Ph.D. in Human Behavior from Pacific Western University, Los Angeles. I am a licensed LMFT in both Arizona and California, serving clients in both states. I worked in medical clinics and in my own private practice in Los Angeles for some years before moving to Arizona where I'm starting over with a new practice. My first two degrees -- a B.S. and M.S. in journalism from Northwestern University near Chicago -- led me to my initial career as a journalist and author, writing for a number of national magazines as well as over a dozen books including the recent "We Don't Talk Anymore: Healing After Parents and Their Adult Children Become Estranged." I write the "Complicated Love" blog for PsychologyToday and have an award-winning podcast "Living Fully with Dr. Kathy McCoy".
I have found a lot of satisfaction as a writer, but the greatest joy of my working life is as a psychotherapist, helping clients to grow, to heal and to discover their own strengths and possibilities.
