Hey there, my name is Heather McKenna and for more than 30 years I have had the great privilege of coming alongside clients in various ways in the mental health field. In that time, I have had the opportunity to work in nearly every sort of role and nearly every type of service environment. I have had the pleasure of serving clients ranging from early childhood age right on through end of life. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC #LC7929) in the state of Maryland as well as a Board Approved Supervisor (#2110). My areas of practice include but are not limited to: Career and Lifestyle Counseling, Bereavement and Grief work, Trauma and Trauma Informed Counseling, Life Transition and Adjustment Counseling, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, Dementia Care, and treatment of Psychotic Disorders and Severe Persistent Mental Illness. My primary theoretical approach is Rogerian, or Person Centered, which means that the focus of therapy is on the client’s capacity and responsibility to discover ways to live more fully. This approach works on the premise that people experience growth in and through a relationship with another person who is caring, understanding, and genuine. I am also an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) practitioner, and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. My technical approach to treatment is eclectic and may include Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral, Mindfulness, Attachment Theory, ACT and Person Centered practices, among others. I would consider it an honor and a privilege to have the opportunity to come alongside you to provide supports and tools for growth, and a safe space in which you can be fully and genuinely yourself as you find your way forward into a healthier more fulfilling way of doing life!
