In 1984 I earned my Master in Education in Counseling. For several years I practiced my counseling skills at my church. Toward the end of 1989 I took a job at a free standing alcohol and drug counseling center and was promoted to Clinical Supervisor the following year. I stayed there for thirteen years and then began work at the Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center working with men seeking recovery and a new start at a better life. After seven years I changed the direction of my counseling career and worked at a hospital-based in-patient psychiatric unit. From January 2003 until March 2017 I also worked part-time providing divorcing parents with a court mandated education program about the effects of divorce upon children. I also have had a private practice working with adult individuals and couples. In addition to my counseling degree I have earned a Bachelor degree in Psychology and a Masters in Divinity.
My approach to counseling is based upon the Cognitive Behavior Theory that thoughts lead to feelings which lead to actions. I also find that Brief Therapy works well for some people. One of the ideas of Brief Therapy is to help the individual reach a solution on their own with guidance. It is not necessary to analyze problems, but it is necessary to analyze client solutions.
