About
Hello, my name is Avis Calhoun (she/her). You may be looking for a therapist to change negative habits, process childhood trauma, develop healthier coping skills, or maybe you just need to talk about complex experiences in an affirming environment. My goal as your therapist is to listen and work with you to achieve tangible skills to achieve your goals. I see the therapeutic relationship as very important and personal. After all, it isn’t easy talking about your life with a stranger. the therapeutic relationship takes time to build trust and I understand this. I use a variety of interventions to help people I work with decrease symptoms of depression, anxiety, triggers, and adjustment. I have over 10 years of experience in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT),, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Play Therapy, and Trauma Focused Therapy. My professional background includes working with those coping with PTSD, Substance Use, childhood trauma, and mood disorders. I have professional experience in the forensic setting working with incarcerated individuals. I also have extensive experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in community mental health settings. I am LGBTQIA+ and neurodivergent affirming. I also enjoy working with folks who have specific cultural and identity issues that they want to explore. As a Therapist, my belief is that rapport and honesty is important to establishing a trusting and autonomous therapist-client relationship. I am enthusiastic about destigmatizing mental health, boosting cultural awareness within mental health, and incorporating telehealth technology in mental health to reach those that typically do not have access to therapy. I believe that therapy can relieve mental health symptoms and offer tangible benefits. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC).
