I have spent my time in the counseling vocation working at every level of care; I started in the inpatient setting, working with people who were in crisis or under court order. I worked with individuals and groups to help them find stability, manage their ongoing symptoms, and prepare for outpatient care. Later, I shifted to a Community Psychiatry practice in one of the oldest and most esteemed hospitals in America. There, I focused on helping people in individual counseling and intensive outpatient group services. Within that practice, I specialized in helping people in the LGBTQ community who also had serious mental illness (like Bipolar Disorder, or Schizophrenia), often with a co-occurring addiction. I served people throughout the East Baltimore area and the larger region, however, so my case experience is broad. Primarily, I use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, mindfulness, and a solutions-focused approach to help people articulate and then achieve their goals. Along the way, my clients and I work together to gain the skills and perspective they need to cope with the uncertainty and unpredictable realities of life. Rapport, structure, and follow-through on the part of the client are things I think are vital to successful counseling.
