Hi, I'm Tom. I'm glad you're here looking for some counseling support. I know it can be a daunting process. I hope I can help you find what you need.

I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the State of Washington. I have lived here for 30 years and I love the dynamic weather, nature and culture of this area. I graduated in the year 2000 from Bastyr University/LIOS with an MA in Applied Behavioral Science. My training is informed by a Systems focus. This means I always work to understand my clients by examining the systems which surround them. This can mean their family of origin/ family of choice, community, work/ school, socioeconomic status/power or lack of power. All of these systems help to shape who we are and how we move through the world. I believe that most of us are "doing the best we can with what we've got." Often what we need to find relief is new information and a new perspective.

My approach is eclectic. I utilize cognitive behavioral approaches, psychodynamic approaches, problem-solving approaches, and narrative/philosophical approaches. But I also hold all such jargon lightly. I am a humanist and I try mostly to achieve my work through understanding, encouragement, support, humility and humor. I am not a "coach" type of counselor. If you need someone to be strict and hold your feet to the fire, I'm probably not your guy. One beauty of the Find A Therapist platform is you have access to many therapists and can find one who suits your style. I may not be everybody's best counselor, but I might be yours.

My career has also been eclectic. I have worked in youth & family services, couples', adult and geriatric services, and as a college counselor. Whatever identities you occupy, I will do my best to meet you there. My work is often two-fold; working on developing new skills and problem solving while simultaneously trying to achieve a philosophical shift into self acceptance/forgiveness.
