About
First off, I am only going to have Monday's to devote to Find A Therapist, as I am a full time social worker Tuesday-Friday with the Department of Veterans Affairs. If you feel that you need more time, like chat time in between sessions, I may not be the counselor for you.
I am a Master's level social worker with a license in clinical social work in Montana, and have over 20 years of experience. I have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, parenting problems, career challenges, OCD and ADHD. I have also helped many people who have experienced physical trauma or emotional abuse. I have worked as a therapist in a busy internal medicine practice helping patients improve their quality of life in as few as five sessions. Conversely, I have been a school social worker working with students and parents for an entire school year and in my private practice even longer, often using creative modalities such as music in therapy. (I am an avid musician and songwriter).
My counseling style is first and foremost geared at getting to know clients as unique individuals. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion, and I don't believe in stigmatizing labels. I have seen too many people completing counseling, but never understanding what counseling even is, and how it works. So therefore, my approach is to first listen and become very familiar with your current issues and then I like to move on to psycho education. During this phase I like to lay the ground work of understanding so we can talk about your issues using the same lingo and framework of understanding for some of your questions like: "what is happening?" "why is this happening" and "how can I work toward meaningful lasting change? "
I believe that it's never too late to change. Change the way we look at things, change the way we live, or change the way we see ourselves. I also believe that stress is highly underrated. I can help you manage life stress, so that it does not have a negative impact on you physically, socially and emotionally. The strongest people are those that know when it's time to ask for help, and then follow through.
I look forward to working with you,
Tim Nordstrom LCSW
