About

My name is Susan Stone. Thank you for reading about me and the ways I think about therapy and my helping role. It would be my honor to join with you as a therapist and to support you with making changes in your life and wellbeing.

I've been a licensed therapist in California for 30 years and in Colorado for 11 years. I provide counseling and consultation to support individuals and professionals to cope, understand, or resolve challenges in their lives, relationships, and work.

My clinical work focuses on adults who are experiencing depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, or stage-of -life issues, including divorce/breakup, individuation to adulthood, parenting, grief and loss, caregiver issues, or chronic illness/disability. I also have substantial experience working with first responders, PTSD, addictions, and career issues or work stress.

For many people, challenges feel overwhelming and like they “don’t make sense." Often its embarrassing - or baffling - to realize that things are out-of-hand. I understand that and have some thoughts.

In my early career, I worked with childhood mental health and early trauma - I find this focus is often very valuable in understanding my adult clients. We all grow from roots - sometimes roots are solid, sometimes, not so much.

To understand someone in the present requires a therapist to understand that person's past. But good therapy goes beyond insight - good therapy challenges the individual to take action in the present, despite their past.

The therapy I provide is based on several schools of thought about change and human development. I draw on Family Systems, Developmental, Attachment, Cognitive, Behavioral, Adlerian, and Psychodynamic theories. My interventions are informed by these, but might be classified as Intensive-Supportive Psychotherapy, Brief Solution-Focused Therapy, Rational-Emotive Therapy, and Cognitive-Behavioral. I also use narrative-based therapies and borrow from existential formats. My work is distinctly client-centered, trauma-informed, strengths-based, and recovery/resilience oriented.

I very much look forward to getting to know you and helping you to sort things out. Always remember, you are the expert about you, but sometimes, having someone hold the flashlight as you explore and plan is helpful.
