About

Greetings! I'm Dr. Steve. My name is Steven Degelsmith and I am a licensed psychotherapist based in Los Angeles. As a licensed LMFT, which I earned in 1986, and then in completing my Ph.D. in Psychology four years later, I have had the privilege of working with a whole spectrum of people in need of mental health treatment for a variety of conditions. My approach My approach to helping people is to use a blend of cognitive-behavioral therapy mixed with humanistic existential undertones that I believe fosters a positive therapeutic relationship and leads to client progress to those desired outcomes. My focus The client population and specialty areas of my practice includes adults of all races, religions, and lifestyle choices. My broad experience gives me a strong foundation to work effectively with adults 18-80 who are adversely impacted by anxiety, stress, depression, and chronic illness like diabetes, fibromyalgia, and MS My communication style My communication style is open, attentive, and engaging. In my view, listening is 51% of the communication process. Helping my clients explore their own struggles and solutions with smart questions is the foundation of my interaction. My journey to therapy I began my work as a counselor in recreation, after-school childcare programs, day camps and residential summer camps. I knew I wanted to work with people and advancing my education to allow me to become a licensed professional was what led me into the mental health field. My goals for you I'm a follower of the phrase: "Begin with the end in mind" (Stephen Covey) and incorporate that into the focus and direction of the therapeutic process. We will discuss what your desired outcomes are in the first session. My first session with you The first session is our opportunity to learn about one another -- for you, learning my style and approach, and for me, exploring what brings you into therapy. We will identify goals and the pace of our work together.
