About
Hello! My name is Stephanie Shaffer, MA and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Licensed School Counselor in West Virginia. I attended Marshall University and received both a BA in Psycholgy with a History Minor, and a MA+30 in Counseling. I have 7 years of professional work experience, in both academic and mental health settings; whether it be with individuals, couples, and/or families.
Through these experiences I have gained the skills to effectively help clients with stress and anxiety, depression, trauma and abuse, relationship issues, family conflict, grief, minfulness, eating disorders, academics, communication, identity concerns, LGBTQ concerns, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, etc. I have also worked with collegiate athletes on mental health and performance to help enhance their college experience as well as helping to bridge the gap between athletics and mental health.
I provide treatment primarily rooted in Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT); however, I may also utilize techniques based on other known psychotherapy approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Mindfulness Therapy, Solution-Focused Counseling, Impact Therapy, etc. The approach I take to treatment depends on the unique needs of each individual and is tailored to your specific needs. In addition, I am a Certified Mindfulness Informed Professional (CMIP), a Certified Shame-Informed Treatment Specialist (CSTS), a Certified Grief Informed Professional (CGP), and am Certified in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (C-DBT).
Counseling is one of my biggest passions and I help people overcome challenges and struggles in their lives to become the best version of themselves. I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. It takes courage to seek out a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. Counseling takes a lot of effort and the more you put into it, the more benefits you will find. I am a firm believer that Practice makes Progress, not Perfect. I am here to support and empower you in your journey!!
