Hi, I'm Sonjia Smith LMFT, an African American, Christian, Queer Cisgender Woman born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I have been providing counseling to couples, families and individuals age 13 and above. My work is focused on helping couples presenting with emotional reactivity, anger outburst and history of intimate partner violence. I work collaboratively with my clients to co-create a safe environment for learning, growing and healing. What is your approach to therapy? I earned my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Long Island University Brooklyn. I am trained in modern and postmodern marriage and family therapy approaches which include Multigenerational Family Therapy, Structural Family Therapy (STFT), Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), and Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT). I also have advanced training in Trauma Focused-CBT, Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP) and crisis de-escalation. What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you? Even if you have made a mistake or fallen short in some way, you do not deserve to be punished and it is time to stop beating yourself up. It’s time to start cheering yourself on and I’m here to help!
