About

Hello, my name is Dr. Sherille Barber, and I am a licensed clinical counselor in the states of North and South Carolina. I have worked in the mental health field for over 35 years and primarily utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to aid clients in reaching their optimum potential in life. I primarily work with those battling depression and anxiety as well as those dealing with trauma-related issues. My approach I utilize an eclectic approach to aid clients with maximizing their optimal potential in the healing process. However, I primarily utilize Behavioral therapy as well as Cognitive Behavioral therapy. Whereas behavioral therapy places an emphasis on people's actions, cognitive therapy emphasizes people's thoughts dictating their feelings and behaviors. As a Cognitive therapist, I work to examine my clients' thought patterns and identify negative belief systems that are causing negative feelings and behaviors. My focus My typical client focus is adults, couples, and families who are struggling with relationship issues that typically revolve around communication styles, adults struggling with depressive symptoms as well as anxiety symptoms and other adult disorders commonly seen, such as Bipolar Disorder and trauma-related disorders. My communication style I feel the counseling environment should be welcoming (proper greeting, light and easy); my tone is comfortable and relaxing with few or no distractions (e.g. no telephone, or interruptions from other staff or family members) somewhere where privacy and confidentiality can be maintained (e.g. somewhere away from other people); non-threatening and non-judgmental. My journey to mental healthcare When I was growing up, one of my relatives was in need of mental health counseling for substance abuse and most likely PTSD and/or Bipolar disorder. However, he never received such help because it was not heard of in the 70’s as it is today.
