About
Hi there! I’m Shelby (they/them), and as someone who identifies within the LGBTQ+ community, I’m unfortunately aware of how challenging it is to find providers who understand our experience as a sexual and gender minority (SGM). Although everyone’s experience is different, I understand what you are going through, how you’re feeling and some thoughts that have crossed your mind. Together we’ll problem solve, explore thought patterns and you’ll receive support. I initially wanted to become a graphic designer, but then quickly realized that it was not a good fit. However, going into the Art Therapy field wasn't a far stretch. Growing up, I enjoyed art and was always the ‘therapist’ in my friend group. While in college and learning about art therapy techniques and approaches with specific populations, I noticed a lack of representation for LGBTQ+ folks. At that time I also came out as gay so I was extremely passionate to explore inclusive care for my new found community. Most LGBTQ+ identifying folks have a horror story when it comes to healthcare. I want to actively challenge that and create a safe space for the community I identify with and am a part of. I would like to think that I make therapy approachable and personable; I have piercings, tattoos and wear casual clothing while using sarcasm and humor during sessions. When I’m not seeing clients, you can find me on the couch watching HGTV (my spouse jokes by saying I’m the third Property Brother) or in my backyard spending time with my dogs. I really value my family so I spend a lot of time with them. One day I want to open my own Pride center for LGBTQ+ youth and allies to gather.
