About
Hello! I'm Shannon, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of West Virginia. WV is my home state, but I completed my Master's degree at New York University in New York City. That experience provided me with insight into the metropolitan lifestyle and definitely contrasted with what I had lived in West Virginia. One thing I learned, though, is that people are the same at our core. We all seek acceptance, love, and healthy relationships. So whether in the big city, or in rural countryside, I hope to be able to provide insight and assistance in helping you come to find these things.
I believe that while we are all the same in foundational ways, we all come to find our best mental health in different ways. I use a variety of approaches to help you achieve this. I understand that the same technique will not work for everyone! Leaning into cognitive behavioral, person-centered, and mindfulness, among other modalities, I believe that together we can find tools to help you find what works in achieving your goals.
I am also a Christian and have provided Christian counseling for several years. When applicable and desired, I love to incorporate these tenets into therapy because I believe that God provided our first textbook in therapeutic approaches to the difficulties in life - the Bible. While I am a Christian, I am capable and open to discussing faith and religious values from other sects as well. I know that a foundation in any faith can be an important building block in a path to better mental health.
I have worked with a variety of populations in the past 13 years. In New York City, I worked with adolescents in a middle school. Moving home to WV I worked in an elementary school setting in a very rural area. For the past 11 years I have worked in a small, Christian based, private practice. In this setting I have worked with individuals, couples, adolescents and children, experiencing a wide range of battles from depression, to self-harm, to anxiety, to addiction, to eating disorders, among many others.
During our therapy, I will not just talk, or give you advice. I fully believe that you are capable of achieving your goals and identifying coping techniques that will best suit you. My job is to guide you there. I will likely give you "homework," - journaling, researching a topic or reading up on information I've shared with you, practicing relaxation techniques, etc. I love working with people and find great joy in seeing them find their own path to mental health.
Outside of therapy, I love spending time with my family. I am a mom to three great kiddos. We homeschool, we bake, we hike, we play. My husband and I love serving in our local church and hosting/entertaining. We are truly grateful for the life we've been given and both try to give back with the gifts God has given us.
I look forward to working with you!
