Hello!
My name is Sam, and here is a little bit of information regarding my experience, approach, and values within counseling.
I earned my Masters of Science in Counseling Psychology (MSCP) in 2015, and have over 4 years of experience in working as a mental health therapist. I have worked in a hospital setting, community mental health, a psychiatric clinic, and am currently in the process of building my own private practice. I have experience working with individuals experiencing intellectual and developmental disabilities, military veterans, college students, and parents. I work with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, anger, and trauma-related symptoms. I have a strong passion for building therapeutic relationships with my clients to help them clearly define their goals, and devising a plan to achieve them. My view of therapy is that if the client is motivated to attend their therapy sessions, they are motivated to make positive changes in their lives. My therapeutic approach primarily draws from motivational interviewing, CBT, and solution-focused therapy, with the therapeutic relationship being of utmost importance. Research has indicated over and over again that the most important factor in determining the success of therapy is trust between the client and the therapist. As such, I regard trust, safety, empathy, and unconditional positive regard as the key elements in facilitating healthy therapeutic relationships to help my clients achieve their goals.
