My name is Ryan Thom and I am a licensed Marriage Family Therapist. I obtained my master’s degree in counseling with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute which is one of the few schools that still focuses on psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapy. I think people have a story to tell, and sometimes understanding our story is grounding it in the shared human experience which includes archetype, metaphor and narrative. I truly believe that more than anything studying within the psychoanalytic and psychodynamic framework has taught me you need an abundance of language to sort things out and more than just saying “hmmmm… how does that make you feel?” While I love psychodynamic language I realize we live in an evidenced based world where CBT and DBT are most often used, I believe that evidenced based therapies help us systematically achieve results through incremental progress and this supports discipline, but we use poetic language and narrative to understand the spirit, to find reason enough to get out of bed, and later on to tell our epic stories of how we healed, how we slayed the dragons in our lives and how we will live happily ever after.
