About

Hello, my name is Matthew Stevens, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia. My counselor identity is complemented by more than 22 years of service as a Navy chaplain. Through the appropriate weaving together of my theological formation with my and counselor identity, I easily connect with military families and am skilled with integrating personal belief systems into my plans of care, as you desire. I have significant experience working with individuals living with traumatic memories, helping them transition to the new “normal” and experience growth after trauma. I also have experience journeying with others through grief and loss.

My educational background includes an MDiv (theological vocations) from Emory University and an MA (professional counseling) from Liberty University. I am currently completing a doctoral program (PhD) in Counselor Education and Supervision through Walden University. I am also a Board Certified Telemental Health provider (Center For Credentialing & Education).

I am very client-centered in my therapeutic approach, striving to create a safe place for coming together. Drawing on the strengths of multiple theories, I attempt to develop plans of care tailored for each client. Specifically, I am drawn to psychodynamic theory’s appreciation of how the unseen influences how we establish and maintain relationships. Throughout our history of relationship-making, we collect the best and worst of experiences, applying them to our current relationships in helpful and unhelpful ways. I also like Acceptance Commitment Therapy, which emphasizes values-based living. I am patient with clients as they untangle and sort different life experiences, freeing them to be most present in their relationships today.

In our “free time,” my family and I enjoy visiting local museums, taking walks on nature trails, and spending time together.
