About
Hello! I am Marisa Swain, a licensed Marriage and Family therapist who has been working in the field since 2015. As someone who strongly feels that everyone deserves to be able to understand themselves, I would love to challenge you to build insight into what makes you who you are and to find the direction you may be looking for. My approach to therapy is derived from evidence-based practices such as cognitive-behavioral, internal family systems, and narrative therapies. I specialize in a variety of areas, including anxiety, depression, stress management, relationship issues, and more. I have specialized training and experience in coaching caregivers of students with mental health needs, including improving communication and defining common goals and behavioral strategies at home. I apply this experience to all clients. I am here to support and guide you in your journey toward emotional well-being and self-understanding. We are complex, so there is no one answer to anything, and I encourage you to come to therapy with an open mind and to learn to consider multiple possibilities and perspectives in what gives you meaning. My approach I have usually started with cognitive-behavioral, internal family systems, and narrative approaches, but let the clients' goals direct where we go from there. I have worked with families behaviorally, so I have a good amount of experience with creating behavior plans toward common goals, including weekly goal tracking and structured, solution-focused work. However, this is not always possible, and progress is largely determined by client readiness. So, I rely heavily on the stages of change, scaling measures (such as PCOMS), and motivational interviewing to guide treatment. I also have experience with Non-violent communication to retrain and establish communication patterns. My focus I have been working with children and families lately, namely caregivers whose child is not accessing their education due to mental health issue.
