About

Hello! Let me introduce myself. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and an American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Approved Supervisor. My journey into therapy is somewhat unique. My first career was with the Federal Government primarily in Human Resource Management and Administrative Services where I retired as the Deputy Director of Human Resources, National Science Foundation. While I enjoyed my government career, what really fulfilled me were my volunteer activities working with families in foster care. I volunteered for several organizations including CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate), Family Mediation in the District of Columbia Family Court, and parenting classes for several organizations. Near the end of my Federal career, I began a graduate degree program in Marriage and Family Therapy at Virginia Tech. From the first class I knew this was what I wanted to do!

Following graduation and a two-year internship I was licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist. Additionally, I completed training to become an AAMFT Approved Supervisor which allows me to supervise students who are in master's programs. I have worked in a variety of settings--clinics, group practice, schools and private practice. I was a clinic director and supervisor at Virginia Tech for a number of years and most recently supervised at the University of Maryland. I also served six years on the Board of Professional Counselors for the state of Maryland.

On a personal note, I am mom, grandmother, sister, and friend. I was married for over 30 years to a wonderful husband who passed after a long illness.

I am experienced in working with couples and families as well as individuals. My field of expertise includes conflict management, career counseling, gender and cultural issues, improving communication skills, depression and anxiety. I typically work from the theoretical concepts of Solution-Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy--or with couples, Emotion Focused Therapy, depending on my clients' presenting problems and needs. My philosophy is it is my job to help you find answers and develop a path forward rather than tell you what to do.
