Our behaviors have worked at some point in our lives, but they may now be obsolete. However, the deeply entrenched grooves of behavioral patterns have been established, and we can’t easily get out of them. And as we see through our behaviors, rather than looking at them, we are often so immersed in our lifestyle that we are unaware of its counterproductivity; we are self-deceived, unaware, unconscious. I believe the goal of therapy is to facilitate flexibility, adaptability–evolvability. We want to increase your behavioral repertoire so that you can pick and choose which behavior is most effective in a given context, rather than repeatedly attempting to fit a square peg into a round hole. We want to expand, integrate and add experience to your awareness so that you are no longer limited and bound by outdated psychological patterns stemming from your past. Avoidance is often the culprit–you steer the ship in only one direction, away from pain, and the result is you never quite reach your destination; you’re adrift in the sea of life. Thus, in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner, I incorporate challenge and novelty because fear and desire are two sides of the same coin, so when you avoid your fears, you are left with no desire, and, on the other hand, to desire means to fear. We will work on the movement towards fear to produce a meaningful life driven by courage and values via accepting both sides of the same coin and evolving.
