About

My name is Kindel Nelson! I'm an LPC and I was trained at the Cleveland Clinic under some wonderful mentors :) I have a master's degree in Community Counseling from John Carroll University and have work experience in the following settings: outpatient, psychiatric residential treatment facility, and school-based. Telehealth is a new area that I was recently trained in and I'm looking forward to using this convenient modality to see clients regularly.

I've learned that great clinical care starts with wonderful and accurate listening during the intake process. In layperson terms this means you're telling me what brought you here today and we're going to figure out a way to help you get better, work through/process, make sense of things and create a plan together until you feel you're back to your normal or happy self and where you want life going again.

I'm a bit eclectic in my approach but I usually like to start with a solution-based treatment planning session because that allows us to think of what the problem is and how things would look differently if our "treatment" worked.

I'd incorporate Cognitive Behavior Therapy or Acceptance Commitment Therapy in some sessions where its clinically appropriate. At other times we might discuss a faith-based approach to anxiety instead of Stephen Hayes' ACT model - and possibly discuss a book called Calm My Anxious Heart and work on making our anxiety triggers so they disappear with a workable plan and praying over them at night.

Sometimes in life grief hits us hard and we need to figure out together on the grief journey if you need someone there to hear you, validate what you're going through and help you remember that special someone while thinking of ways to keep living life after they've passed. Together we'd learn about stages of grief, how to cope with those feelings and how to remember well and continue living with those memories. I've taken coursework in trauma and like to incorporate Narrative Therapy and a book called Your Body Keeps the Score. Being able to tell our story and make sense of our bodily responses is so powerful and helps us live safely in the world.

I'm new to couples work but would love to use the Gottman Institute training tools to help improve functioning in your couple's relationship - do you need new goals as a couple, some repairs after certain miles are in or maybe it's time to end the coupling and find a way to resolve that loss.

During my educational experience I learned about psychopharmacology as a treatment approach. Personally, I think that at times a medication in conjunction with another treatment approach might be the best pairing for effective outcomes, while other times we can use talk therapy and alternative medicine approaches. I'm here to guide in you in selecting the best treatment approach for you and we'll measure outcome success - this means showing that you're getting better!

I've worked with teens, adults and families experiencing chronic pain. I'm able to help you heal and cope with chronic pain. Together we might look at things with your parents/family from a family systems perspective and what's gained by staying in pain. Other times, we might explore trauma or post oncology treatments and learn coping skills to manage the pain and try to increase a tolerance of pain or ways to remedy the pain without medication. It's important to know that trauma and cancer treatments do impact our bodies and what we can do to relieve the pain that is there.

I use clinical guidelines and depend a lot on the diagnose. I learned that the diagnose is the most important piece because then you can use science-based treatments to improve which is really cool to see happen in therapy. It matters to me that you are getting back to your normal and most satisfied self in as few sessions as possible and that you become autonomous - this means independent from me again. You might only need check-ins every so often or a person to come back to after a new life event or stressor.

If what we're doing in therapy doesn't work or it's not a great therapeutic match up, you and I both have the right to share our opinions on that, and see if a referral to someone else or a different treatment approach might make more sense.

That's a little bit of information regarding my education and treatment approach and how I think I can help. Let me look at the prescreening information and see if we're a good match.
