I am Kathy Helgerson. I earned my Master’s Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at California State University, Dominguez Hills. My story: I have personally experienced trauma and grief. My divorce was final on October 1, 1996. In November, my 21-year-old son died instantly. And in January 1997, I was struck by a van and suffered severe physical injuries. After the accident, I went back to college and eventually earned my master’s degree; these experiences substantially impacted my counseling abilities. I am compassionate and understanding of the pain of others. I have resilience. I believe my faith sustained me and helped me through these struggles, and brought me to where I am today. I am multicultural, a good listener, empathic and non-judgmental. I have had/have a good rapport with almost all of my clients. The client is the expert for him or herself. I listen to the client’s struggles that may have come up between sessions. I make suggestions for the client. I re-frame parts of stories. I help the client see the solutions within themself. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you regarding your counseling concerns.
