About
Hello. My name is Karen McGuffey. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) and a Certified Domestic Abuse Counselor. I have over 13 years of experience as a therapist in Community Mental Health and 4 years of experience in private practice. My approach I draw from a holistic mind/ body approach utilizing many therapies including Mindfulness-Based (MBCT), Cognitive Behavioral (CBT), Psychodynamic, and Somatic therapies. I provide trauma-informed therapy. I am formally trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy; an evidenced-based treatment for PTSD and unresolved trauma. My focus I work with individuals experiencing trauma, PTSD, grief and loss, chronic pain and illness, anxiety, difficulty with life transitions and relationships, codependency, low self-esteem, and difficulty managing intense emotions. I also work with couples. My communication style I provide a safe therapeutic environment where you can resolve issues, deal with internal emotional conflicts, heal, and move forward in life. I create a healing space where growth, understanding, and change can occur. At times individuals seek therapy because they feel stuck or unsatisfied, or want to explore negative patterns that are holding them back. I also work with individuals who want relief from past trauma. My journey to mental healthcare What attracted me to become a therapist is a real curiosity about why we do what we do. We are all unique and I look to understand each client's reality. I also feel a need to help others who are suffering. My goals for you I collaborate with clients on setting goals. First, I listen to what a client or couple is looking for in therapy. I will make further suggestions along the way if I believe something is getting in the way of them achieving their goals. My first session with you First and foremost, you can expect that I will listen to you. I can start with a specific issue that may not require looking back at your history.
