Hi, I'm Josh Kates, LCSW. I’m originally from the suburbs of New York city and then lived and trained in NYC at New York University's School of Social Work. My early training was focused on short term work using several models of therapy like CBT and DBT. For the last 8 years I have been deeply involved with Schema Therapy (ST) and am a full member of the International Society of Schema Therapy (ISST). I am a Certified Advanced Schema Therapist, an approved ST supervisor and ST trainer. Ask me about Schema Therapy and I will share a free client’s guide to ST - it’s a deeper model of treatment that provides the potential for deeper change. For couples and marriages, I integrate many of the teachings from The Gottman Method of marriage counseling. No one model of therapy necessarily solves everyone’s problems or helps them to make the changes they might need, so I work with some of the above methods and, when appropriate, I may integrate some of my own life experiences.
Your decision to talk with someone shows that you have the determination to solve your problems. Difficult experiences of the past that may not be resolved or understood can create problems in the present. We will work together so can you understand those past struggles and how they may have shaped your life and relationships. Once we have some understanding of those parts of your life, it will help us address how those experiences influence the challenges you are having now. We will use that understanding to change unproductive patterns, resolve or improve current challenges and develop strategies to create a better future. We will work together to help you get you to a better place in your life.
