About
My name is Jian Tan, a licensed professional clinical counselor. I hold an active license issued by Board of Behavioral Sciences of California. I am an accomplished and dynamic professional with a master’s degree in counseling and proven experience helping individuals, couples, children, families, and groups. I am a skilled interpersonal communicator able to facilitate conversation and provide a safe and welcoming environment to encourage participation. My approach I primarily use an eclectic approach to maximize therapeutic outcomes, employing Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Logotherapy, Family Therapy, Play Therapy (on-line version when needed), Sand-tray Therapy (on-line version when needed), and Child-Parent-Relationship Therapy. My focus I am able to work with a variety of clients, helping them decrease symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, grief, substance use disorder, spouse/partner relationship problem/distress, parent-child relationship problem/distress, personality disorders, etc. My communication style I use attentive and engaging interpersonal processing to facilitate online video conversation, providing a safe, relaxing, and welcoming atmosphere to encourage client's engagement. I hope my client would feel accepted, respected, validated, encouraged, supported, empowered, and at times challenged, when working with me. My journey to therapy About 15 years ago, I volunteered at a non-profit organization. While I was there, I witnessed or experienced quite a few incidents that went unresolved due to possibly lack of communication proficiencies as well as conflict resolution skills. Relying on our well-meaning intentions, we counseled people in need, to the best of our ability, by trial and error - sometimes things got better; sometimes, unfortunately, worse. Then I received a guest who is a counselor and his story touched me.
