I work with men whose motivation to start therapy is often due to: (1) an abrupt life change; (2) the unease of a costly behavior, habit, or belief; (3) the profound concern of loved ones; or (4) the requirements of the legal system. Most of my clients face (or have recently faced!) some type of ultimatum. For such a man, therapy is rarely seen as a luxury. Instead, they tend to see therapy as something of a 'necessary bargain'—a means to specific end. My typical client is pragmatic and can be prone to annoyance if the goals are ill-defined, un-engaging, purposeless, or unrewarding.

Therapy should be intentional and structured. I bring my experience as a teacher to the construction of sensible goals, engaging sessions and innovative homework. For many men, the therapeutic relationship is the first place they are allowed to be completely candid without the possibility of recrimination. I listen with regard, acceptance and curiosity.
