About
My name is Jean Meissner and I have been in the helping field for 14 years. I have been a therapist for 5.5 years now and am licensed through the state of Wisconsin. I first went to college for studio art. I love creating art and I love bringing a level of creativity into my work with people. I decided to get my master's degree in counseling after working in group homes for developmentally disabled people and people with chronic mental illnesses. I received my MSE in 2012 and worked with behavioral youth, as well as delinquent teen boys, before accepting an outpatient agency job. I have experience working with people 6 years old to adult with various physical, mental, and spiritual difficulties. In the last few years, I have gained interest in working with lifestyle and decided to get certified in primal health (meaning how we eat, how we move, how we handle stress, how we sleep, and how modern society is moving too fast for how we as people are biologically evolving. This creates a myriad of issues from physical ailments to excess anxiety). After battling a chronic illness myself, I found that changing my lifestyle has improved my life in so many ways and I want to bring this knowledge to the people I work with. Overall, the most important aspect to counseling, in my opinion, is relating to people and empathizing with their experiences. I bring a person-centered approach and use tools such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness techniques, logotherapy, values/personal philosophies, and family systems. I bring a sense of humor to my work and I also can be direct with my feedback, as no one can change without feedback (even though it's tough to hear at times). I look forward to helping you navigate to the best version of yourself.
I want to inform you that I work as an independent contractor with Find A Therapist on a very part-time basis. I will try to get to your messages daily, but it might be every other day. I cannot message you at all hours of the evening, because sleep is important! So I'm usually unavailable from 10pm-9am Central Standard time (USA). I also work several other jobs and my in-person clients get my attention first, meaning I can't be as available on Find A Therapist during certain times. If I assess that you might be struggling with issues that are inappropriate for on-line counseling, I will work with you to refer you to in-person counseling. This is not the place to be if you're having suicidal or homicidal intention, if you are suffering with severe trauma, if you are diagnosed with a personality disorder that is overtaking your life, or for any other reason that I assess is too complicated to be worked on on-line. Please understand it is my duty to refer if anything is out of my scope of practice and my duty to warn if you are having any safety issues with yourself or with others. It looks as though I have a very limited schedule to have live phone or video sessions, but I can work with you in scheduling those on an individual basis. I just can't have a set schedule because life can be busy! Let me know if you have any questions! Thank you :)
