About

My name is James Hyman, and it would be a pleasure to work with you! I am a licensed clinical professional counselor in the state of Montana with 18 years counseling experience. I received a Master Degree in Counseling Psychology from Naropa University, following a Bachelor Degree in psychology, religion and nutrition from the University of Georgia. I have worked with individuals, groups and families in a variety of treatment settings nationally and internationally. I have provided wilderness therapy to teens across the US, as well as counseling in a variety of therapeutic boarding schools. I also served as Clinical Director in a residential treatment center in the South Pacific. I have given professional talks across the nation on teen and parenting issues. I have developed extensive experience in counseling those with depression, anxiety, ADHD, trauma, attachment issues, and high-functioning autism, as well as family therapy, parent coaching, and couples counseling. I am able to offer long-term counseling as well as brief therapy/solution-focused counseling.

I will strive to understand your goals and collaborate with you on steps toward success. My style is to embody respect and acceptance in our work together. Clients get to choose which issues are discussed and toward what end. My role is not to offer advice, but to offer feedback, based on what is seen, heard, and inferred through the course of our counseling relationship. I will share observations and reflections, encouraging you to draw your own conclusions. I will not tend to view the struggles we discuss as problems or failures, but as opportunities. In those moments, I may invite you to explore your perceptions about various opportunities for growth, all in favor of clarifying direction, and ultimately, achieving your interests.

My greatest hope is that you enjoy peace of mind as a result of our work together. I will make every attempt to gently challenge you, while seeking to make the experience comfortable.
