About

Chris Maxwell, MA, LPCC

Hello, and Welcome! I would venture to say that for many people, if not most, stress, anxiety, depression (and other problems) have greatly increased lately, as a result of things like the pandemic and other recent situations. Really, we've been living through extraordinarily challenging times, and it has affected everyone. Given this, any one of us might consider the benefits of taking a step back and practicing or learning some self-care. We are all in the same boat, and I am here to offer some help.

My name is Chris Maxwell and I'm an LPCC (Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor) in New Mexico, in the beautiful Southwest. I have worked in the mental health field overall for over thirty years. I studied psychology, mental health and counseling in both college and graduate school. I attained the Master of Arts in Counseling degree at wonderful UNM. I have extensive experience in the field. My current focus is helping adult individuals who are located in New Mexico to maintain and improve their overall mental health. This can mean working on anything from anxiety, to phobias or fears, to depression, anger or other mood issues, grief and loss, trauma, stress and coping, and other general life issues. I do not judge, blame or label people and really believe we all have the right and inherent ability to be who we are, no matter our orientation, gender, race, age, etc. Spirituality (both Eastern & Western) and science undergird my thought, though spirituality certainly does not have to be a part of counseling sessions, if not desired. My typical approach is a combination of CBT (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, focusing on thoughts, feelings and behaviors), with a constant underlying person-centered or Rogerian perspective. This entails being non-judgmental, having genuine respect, compassion and concern, as well as empathy, but also helping people to stabilize and grow. Note, too, that I am also a certified Clinical Tele-Mental Health Provider (CTMH) and am trained in EMDR for Trauma treatment.

Understandably, a first session can seem frightening, but no need to worry, you are enough, just as you are. I assure you. Just be yourself. And it all happens just one step at a time anyway. Lastly, I am like a tour guide, not a boss or authority figure (so, nothing to fear), but someone also traveling life's path, and offering support and guidance, tips and insights along the way.

So, give it a try, introduce yourself and say Hello! Thank you.
