About

Greetings! I am Dr. Sandy Acheampong, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC #14297) and a Qualified Clinical Supervisor (QS #127457) in the state of North Carolina with over 12 years of experience as a mental health therapist. My career as a professional counselor has spanned over 24 years and work with thousands of clients in the clinical mental health, university and school settings - and I have loved every single minute of my career. Clients refer to me as “Dr. A.”

In May 2009, I earned a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education with a Minor in Psychology from North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. In December 1996, I earned a Master of Arts in Education (M.A. Ed.) in Counselor Education with a concentration in School Counseling from East Carolina University in Greenville, NC. It was in August 1991, that I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Secondary English Education. I have held professional memberships in the American Counseling Association and the North Carolina Counseling Association and am a former Secretary of the North Carolina Counseling Association (2019-20).

I have over 12+ years of professional experiences as a clinical mental health counselor. My clinical work with clients has focused on providing counseling care for issues related to: depression, anxiety, stress management, relationship issues, trauma experiences, divorce and separation, grief, adjustment as well as academic and career planning.

My theoretical orientation is an integrated one tailored to a client’s developmental needs and therapeutic goals and often includes: Cognitive Behavior Therapy as well as elements of Solution-Focused Brief Counseling, Adlerian Counseling, and Reality Therapy. My helping approach also draws heavily from theories of resilience, wellness, life-span career development, learning and college student development.

Since 2012, I have been an Adjunct Professor (Contributing Faculty) in the M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at Walden University where I regularly teach courses to graduate students who are training to become clinical mental health counselors. As a clinical supervisor, I regularly provide supervision to counseling students or those seeking licensure as mental health clinicians.

Please know that I consider it an honor to work with and care for you.
