About
My name is Caryl Brent and I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in New York State who has over 40 years of experience in working with a variety of problems including PTSD and trauma, women's issues, depression, anxiety, vocational concerns, and problems with alcohol/substance use. I have experience in working with many populations including Veterans and LGBT. My approach I have been trained in a variety of different approaches including Interpersonal, Adlerian, EMDR, Attachment theory, and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. The reason for my wide scope in training is to tailor my approach to each individual depending on their preferences and needs. I find the "one therapy approach fits all" to be overly restrictive and unhelpful. My focus I am comfortable treating a variety of conditions, but I am very aware that some clients may not be a good fit for my approach. I usually encourage clients to try a few sessions with me to see if it is a good fit. If not, I am more than willing to refer them to someone that may be better suited for them. My communication style I attempt to create a safe haven for people in which they can be open and not feel judged. I am interested in getting to know the person and not just their problems and concerns. It also helps me to see what has worked or not worked in the past in tackling their issues. My journey to therapy Like most therapists, I became attracted to therapy due to my attending therapy myself and learning how to cope with my issues. It has led me to understand how difficult self-change can be, and how helpful it is to talk to someone else. My goals for you I believe in setting realistic goals for clients which means breaking down issues into small steps. I find that clients can be very self-critical when they pursue goals that are unrealistically high to achieve in a short time.
