About

I, Camilla Wilson McCoy, obtained my Master of Education in Community Counseling at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia on August 21, 2009. I obtained an Advance Counseling Certificate from Lynchburg College, January 14, 2011. I am licensed by the Board of Virginia as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC # 0701005374). I was issued my license by the Board of Virginia on December 5, 2012. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina (LCMHC #12692). I also obtained my National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Certified Clinical Trauma Professional (CCTP) certifications, September 27, 2016. I am a Board-Certified Clinical Supervisor, for the Virginia Board of Counseling since June, 2018. I also obtained my certification as a Certified Specialist in Anger Management (CSAM) on September 17, 2019. I have over 11 years of counseling experience and three years of experience with clinical program development.

I specialize in providing inpatient counseling, such as residential treatment services, and outpatient counseling for children, adolescents, and adults. I have extensive experience and skill working with children (ages 5-18) and adults (ages 19-60+) diagnosed with mood disorders, trauma and stressor-related disorders, psychotic disorders, adjustment issues, behavioral disorders, insecure and reactive-attachment styles, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and autism spectrum disorders, to name a few. I also demonstrate competence in family work, through offering parent management training, co-parenting classes, and family psychotherapy. Many years of my training and experience has also been for those in varied systems of care, al be-it: foster care system, juvenile justice system, social services and community-service agencies.

My theoretical orientation is systemic, relationship oriented and focused. I believe it is imperative to build trust and rapport. I recognize these elements as foundational principles for understanding interpersonal skills, attachment, caregiving, and even problem-solving styles. This information lends itself to being useful to understanding how one navigates relationships, interacts with others and can help with identifying patterns of behaviors and thoughts that can lead to emotional & mental distress, ruptured relationships, and a sense of inertia. I also utilize cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help clients identify heard messages and identify distorted patterns of thinking that impact their self-esteem, evokes feelings of fear and inferiority. They are then equipped with strategies for challenging and replacing such beliefs, so they operate from a place of resiliency and self-worth. I am also a huge proponent for increasing emotional awareness and teaching emotional regulation skills, to help clients make safe, rational, informed and “thinking-brain” decisions, in relaxed bodies.

Play therapy techniques and play in therapy, are also utilized in my work, specifically with younger children, as a platform for children to invite adults into their world, to help promote expression of feelings, and insight of problems, and as a platform for them describing their world. I make use of play therapy and other behavioral therapy interventions for rehearsing new skills. I will employ other evidenced-based strategies to help me meet the needs of my clients.
