I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 10 years experience conducting psychotherapy in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Concerning my approach: I start from where the client is at. For instance, if the client suffers from depression or anxiety I may employ methods from the cognitive therapies which focus on styles of thinking usually consisting of negative thoughts called “cognitive distortions”. I will often then have the client who may typically be stuck to perform an action however small which may get him or her out of a repetitive thinking and behaving pattern.
I also address drug and alcohol problems which very often co-occur along with depression, anxiety and relationship issues. I may suggest that the client attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting or one of its alternatives such as SMART Recovery or Lifering.
My bottom line is this: Much of the real work in therapy occurs outside of the therapy session which tends to cut-down on the length of the overall process.
