About
Brad has worked at the community mental health level for over 30 years as a therapist, speaker, trainer, clinical supervisor, and clinical director. His experience is diverse across the lifespan, having been the clinical director of the Child and Adolescent Division at Egyptian Health Department from 2011-2017 and then serving as Clinical Director of Adult Programs from 2019 until 2022, where he recently “early retired” from community mental health to join Fox Valley Institute. Brad has had a parenting book published, “Parent’s Solution to a Problem Child”, and for the past 6 years he has been providing teletherapy part-time to couples and individuals internationally. He specializes in young adults in transition, couples with young children, parenting issues, adult ADHD, addictions, and trauma. He is certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. “We actually know a lot about the kinds of things that work in therapy: Mindfulness, behavior activation and cognitive restructuring for depression and anxiety; and some form of gradual exposure and narrative changing for trauma. We also know a lot about what couples that stay together in happy marriages do differently than people who end up divorcing or living in misery. But I see therapy as a bolder endeavor than “learning new skills”. That’s part of it, but ultimately it is an organic conversation between human beings where growth and change are the expectation. Empathy, support, and education about mental health concepts are necessary, but not usually sufficient to create the conditions for lasting change. Real change happens through the dynamic, ongoing conversations in the therapeutic relationship, where the person comes to know themselves more deeply. That’s where the magic is.”
