About

Hello, my name is Bar Lehmann. As a counselor, I provide a safe place where one can explore problems, questions, issues in a way that has the potential to lead to new emotional, practical, or other insights. I bring a sincere interest in others and respect for diverse life paths, choices, and challenges. I am a very good listener. As a therapist/counselor I am in a position to be objective, I am not a friend and therefore have no ego in counseling conversations. I seek to understand the problem in your own words, and help create collaborative windows for exploration and change. Eventually, everyone has to be accountable to themselves, I don’t overstep my role.

I draw from an integrative mix of mix of therapeutic philosophies, rooted in my social work education, existential, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral perspectives. My liberal arts classics undergraduate education (St. John’s College) also informs my work in regards to socratic dialogue, and often can see parallels in the challenges we face and those in literature both modern and ancient. I believe reading and literature can be a powerful way to reflect on ones situation, learn to see them through varied lenses, and find we are often in much better company with the challenges we face than we may have previously considered. Check out my list of recommended books (https://www.better-state-of-mind.com/books).

I have a professional and personal interest and experience in integrative approaches to mental wellness including diet and biofeedback. I am a BCIA certified neurofeedback and biofeedback practitioner using a variety of biofeedback modalities including QEEG brain-mapping. I find that for many people, diet and nutrition can be an important part of mental wellness.

My credential are: MSW, LICSW, LCSW, and BCN (internationally certified neurofeedback provider). I am a clinical social worker and have over 7 years of experience in mental health and mental wellness. My experience includes diagnostic assessments (ADHD/ADD, Anxiety, Depression, PTSD, and more) psychotherapy, and coaching. I earned my masters degree at the University of Texas at Austin, and have experience working with children, youth, and adults.
I also just opened Better State of Mind, a local mental wellness center serving both Washington, DC and Virginia: www.better-state-of-mind.com
