Eating disorders are often indicated by persistent food-related or eating behaviors that negatively impact your mental and/or physical health. They often involve an individual focusing too much on food and body image. These can take the form of diagnosable conditions such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge-eating. Individuals could have the fear of gaining weight or even have an abnormally low body weight, along with a distorted perceptions of their body shape. Others may describe periods of eating a large amount of food in a short period of time, called bingeing, followed by an attempt to rid oneself of the extra calories in an unhealthy way, such as forced vomiting or laxative use. These behaviors are often accompanied by a sense of a total lack of control paired with an inability to cope.
