About

Hello! I am Abrina Schnurman-Crook, Ph.D., LPC, and I have been working with crisis individuals, couples, and with young adults in various settings for several decades. If you are ready to be challenged in a direct manner, I may be a good fit for you. My approach is eclectic, according to what is needed to move forward. I pull from psychodynamics systems, Gestalt, Gottman, Group Relations, and other theories and pedagogies. Most people understand CBT and DBT, but a purist approach does not typically capture the complex issues presented. I am directive and will not just listen and reflect back on support. That is appropriate for certain spaces and times, particularly in processing a very fresh trauma or critical incident. Typically, what brings a client to therapy is not brand new. In most instances, I WILL try to offer alternate perspectives from your way of thinking or past behaviors. You will always leave with homework to think or act in an experimental way. I do not assign worksheets, journaling, or assessments. You will be accountable, and I expect you to report what you attempted to do to address what you agreed to in the prior session. It is work and should feel like it, with a little understanding, support, and humor, along the way. Thanks for considering me. I work with couples and individuals. I prefer treating relationship issues, conflict issues, self-confidence and esteem barriers, career transitions, and job performance concerns. I work with resilience issues and carry over concerns from childhood and family dynamics. I can work with a range of women's issues and have worked with marginalized populations across a large spectrum. The tone, almost from the start, will be a challenge, with support and trust. We will attempt to infuse lighter notes and humor where we find them. Unless there is a very fresh incident that requires deep, supportive listening, the pace will move to the level that the client can manage the challenging perspectives offered.
