Personal Statement
For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed making art. I grew up drawing and painting and my parents supported my passion. I studied commercial art and graphic art throughout my twenties then finally landed a bachelor of fine art degree from the University of Tulsa with an emphasis in graphic design. I was so happy to finally get to do what I loved for a living and enjoyed being a graphic designer for 10 years. Eventually, I felt something was lacking. I knew I had more to give and felt a deep desire to help people. That is when I decided to go back to school to combine art with therapy and become an art therapist. I became licensed as a professional counselor (LPC) and registered as an art therapist (ATR). In art therapy, art is used as a tool to help express feelings, gain insight and heal. I also enjoy making jewelry and painting with pastels. I believe strongly in the creative process as a way to relieve stress, which I utilize in my own life – whether it’s jewelry-making, drawing and/or painting.
