Personal Statement
I have over 10 years experience working with adolescents. From working in the classroom to the wilderness to residential treatment centers, it is clear that adolescence is a difficult time. Adolescence is a time for exploration, creation of the self, and understanding the world around you. This process can sure be overwhelming when trying to fit in, be noticed, and find value. Isn't it hard enough as an adult?!
I worked in a north Dallas middle school, where kids struggled to meet basic criteria to stay in school, let alone in class. If kids feel stupid they struggle to acknowledge it, rather they act out by shutting down or acting as class clown or being a distraction in any way they can.
Working with adolescents in a wilderness program north of Houston, I was honored by the teens" struggles to explore their limits, their emotions, and their relationships. This cannot be done without the feeling of safety, honor and compassion.
